May 14: Quietly wait for God, O my soul

Let all that I am wait quietly before God, for my hope is in him. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress where I will not be shaken. My victory and honor come from God alone. He is my refuge, a rock where no enemy can reach me. O my people, trust in him at all times. Pour out your heart to him, for God is our refuge. (Psalm 62:5-8 — New Living Translation)

Here is a man of God reminding himself of the great truths of his faith. Satan often tries to discourage us, fill us with fear, and place enemies all around. He has power to put his lies into our minds. He may use the things people say, or the circumstances of our lives, or even our own family. So it’s crucial that we know these truths and reject all the lies and fear and discouragement that come from the devil.

This man of faith commands his own soul to wait quietly and confidently for God alone. Nothing and no one else is an unshakable foundation for our lives. Only God is almighty and unchangeable. Only He can give us a secure and firm future. God is our hope and a rock that no enemy can reach. He is our victory and refuge — the only One on whom we can truly depend. He keeps us safe no matter where we live or where we have to travel. The Lord Jesus is the mighty Conqueror of the devil and death, and has promised to be with us always. His Word even says His angels have been given a special charge to care for us. So no enemy can frighten or defeat us.

Does this incredible confidence and peace live in your heart? Are you waiting quietly on God and the Lord Jesus Christ in every area of your life? Our victory and honor come from God. We cannot wait for men; they may or may not do right by us. But God will see to it that we are exalted and honored at the proper time. Keep these words and truths in your mind and mouth. They will make you strong and brave; they will fill you with hope; they will keep your soul in peace. Yes, trust in the Lord at all times, pour out your hearts to Him in prayer for He is your refuge!

This is a passage about overcoming fear, the greatest weakness of the devil. Only those with a true relationship with God have no fear, everyone else is controlled by it: the fear of losing your job, the fear of tomorrow, the fear of not having enough money, the fear of death, the fear of being alone, etc. But our faith in God is a rock where no enemy can reach, a tower, a stronghold. If you have not tasted this hope, what are you waiting for? If you have tasted it, why would you ever let it go?
